Beginning with an under-painting of acrylic paints. I start painting energetically onto the panel with no judgment or thought. This provides me the opportunity to experiment with various tools and colors and lets me react for the layers to follow.
In the following layers, I use a much softer palette using oil paint mixed with cold wax. I thoughtfully paint over the under-painting to garner a sense of mystery and bring cohesion to the piece. This process is very intuitive. Painting with oil paint mixed with cold wax allows me to build layers and scrape back layers of paint, allowing the viewer to peek at glimpses of the under-painting - revealing unexpected gems.
I continue building and scraping back layers until the painting evokes a feeling of optimism and calmness, amidst the unexpected elements.
